Global leading brand of ropes: French BEAL’s journey of professionalism and innovation

BEAL: A story of family, friendship, and a legend of camaraderie.

"Share, Respect, and Commitment" are our unwavering core values. These beliefs have allowed BEAL to become a recognized pioneer of innovation in the fields of climbing and aerial work today.

The story of BEAL has been unfolding since the 1950s.

From our initial prototypes to continuous innovations for mountain sports and aerial work,
we invite you to explore BEAL's journey to success!

1951

Once upon a time, there was BEAL

Pierre and Janine Beal founded a company named after their family, settling in Vienne, Isère, France.
In their early days, they mainly produced shoelaces and various ropes for clothing and interior design.

1974

Michel Beal enters the world of ropes

Pierre and Janine's son, Michel, joined the company founded by his parents.
In 1975, he attended the Grenoble Mountain Exhibition to meet with clients.
It was there that he discovered that the ropes used by climbers were strikingly similar to those manufactured by BEAL.

1975

A momentous meeting

Michel Beal's encounter with the renowned climber Yannick Seigneur marked a turning point in the company's development.
Seigneur became BEAL's technical consultant, infusing his modern climbing philosophy and participating in the development of the brand's first climbing ropes.

1976

A vibrant, fluorescent rope!

Pierre, Michel, and Yannick worked tirelessly to create their first climbing rope.
One Saturday, they ran out of white thread and had to continue testing with colored thread.
This unexpected change proved to be a huge success!
Months later, this first "dynamic" and "fluorescent" rope officially debuted at a climbing exhibition.

1977

Talented climber Patrick Edlinger joins BEAL

He possessed an extraordinary personality, astonishing talent, and a unique climbing style.
In the late 1970s, it was Patrick Bérault who, with great humility, suggested we collaborate with this genius.
In the climbing world, he was affectionately known as "The Blond," while at BEAL, we fondly called him "God."
His radiant smile, sparkling eyes, and graceful dance with the rock face remain deeply etched in our memories.

1986

At the top of the world

Ten years later, the industrialist Pierre Beal, the passionate entrepreneur Michel Beal, the visionary mountain guide Yannick Seigneur, and the climbing icon Patrick Edlinger – their meeting and collaboration finally bore fruit.
Thanks to the combined efforts of this group, BEAL has become a leading brand in the global climbing and mountaineering rope industry.

1990

The era of rope specialization

During the 1990s, BEAL began to develop and differentiate its rope product lines according to various uses.
This led to the creation of the Iceline ice climbing rope, designed specifically for ice climbing – it was smooth, soft, and had extremely low impact force, quickly becoming essential equipment for climbers.
Subsequently, in 1993, BEAL launched its first industrial rope designed for aerial work, officially expanding its professional scope to industrial and protective applications.

2000

More than just ropes!

BEAL diversified its operations by acquiring Austrian competitor Edelweiss and began developing new products specifically for aerial activities and work.
Always at the forefront of innovation, 2000 also witnessed the birth of the Aerolight harness – the market's first harness with no metal buckles, symbolizing BEAL's continuous spirit of breakthrough in climbing and protective equipment.

2004

Always keep dry

DRY COVER and GOLDEN DRY are two significant innovations in the world of ropes that BEAL is proud of to this day.
The former is a surface treatment that enhances the rope's abrasion resistance and gives it hydrophobic properties; the latter makes the rope completely waterproof and extremely durable.
The emergence of these two technologies allows climbers to train and challenge themselves with confidence in all weather and environmental conditions.

2006

Going global

We chose to establish a second production factory in Madagascar.
In the heart of this country known as the "Red Island," the new factory fully replicates the structure of our first factory in Vienne, France, mainly producing Active Line series ropes.
Within the 12,000 square meter facility, there is also a sewing workshop dedicated to manufacturing products such as safety harnesses, slings, and lanyards.

2014

A founder, a legacy

On April 1st, our founder Pierre Beal passed away.
Friends and partners from all over the world sent messages to pay tribute to this great man who founded our brand.
As his former workshop manager said, we will always remember him as BEAL's first employee – fully dedicated, immensely proud of his work and products.

2015

Lightweight, you say? Absolutely!

Pierre Beal's spirit continues to live on, and we continue to push the boundaries of innovation.
Between 2014 and 2015, BEAL launched two groundbreaking products:
The Gully rope – the thinnest and lightest twin rope on the market; and the Opéra rope – the first single rope weighing less than 50 grams per meter.
Simultaneously, in the field of aerial work, we also launched the BEAL PRO series, providing reliable and innovative equipment for all professionals.

2023

Highly Friendly

We reached a new milestone: a new brand identity and a new headquarters.
The new operational base was designed with carbon footprint reduction at its core, while also modernizing our production facilities and processes.
With our new brand slogan, "Highly Friendly," we reassert our origins and philosophy – this new phase symbolizes our pursuit of excellence while remaining true to our fundamental roots and the spirit born of friendship.

2024

Sharing our expertise with you

In 2024, BEAL proudly announces two significant milestones – the opening of its first training center in France, and its first physical store in Sarajevo.

The birth of the first BEAL boutique symbolizes our desire to be closer to customers and provide the community with a unique and immersive brand experience.

Meanwhile, our IRATA certified training center
will provide professional rope access training, allowing aerial work professionals to directly benefit from the manufacturer's expertise and fully leverage our potential in rope innovation and technology.
