Can NRG-5 Emergency Food Ration really be stored for 20 years? How do I read the expiry date?
The package states a shelf life of 20 years, which the manufacturer's fact sheet counts from the date of production; the expiry date as shown on the package prevails. Store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
Do I have to add water or heat NRG-5?
No. You can eat it as it is, or crush it and mix it with water into porridge or an energy drink; no heating or cooking is needed at any point.
Is NRG-5 as hard as a compressed biscuit?
No. Once opened it is a soft block that breaks apart easily and does not need hard chewing.
How long does one box of NRG-5 last?
One 500 g box holds about 2300 kcal, which the manufacturer states covers an adult's daily energy requirement. How much you actually need depends on age, body size and activity level.
Can children and older adults eat NRG-5?
The manufacturer states it is also suitable for children from 6 months. Crushed and mixed with water into porridge, it is softer and easier for older adults to eat. People allergic to gluten-containing cereals should choose NRG-5 ZERO; people allergic to soy should not eat it.
Is NRG-5 vegetarian? Does it contain lactose?
The manufacturer's fact sheet labels it vegan and lactose free; the Chinese label on the Taiwan package reads fully vegetarian, and the nutrition label lists lactose as 0 g.
What allergens does NRG-5 contain?
It contains gluten-containing cereals and soy (the ingredients include baked wheat, soy protein and barley malt extract). People allergic to gluten-containing cereals should choose NRG-5 ZERO; people allergic to soy should not eat it.
How long can NRG-5 be kept after opening?
Please finish it as soon as possible after opening; store it as you would ordinary biscuits.
Are there test reports for NRG-5?
Yes. On import, the product obtained the Taiwan FDA "Food and Related Products Import Permit Notice", and Mabu Valley also sent it to SGS for 12 preservative items, none of which were detected. The original documents are shown in this page's section on what goes into the food.
Do I still need to prepare drinking water with NRG-5?
NRG-5 can be eaten as it is without adding water first, but it cannot replace drinking water; keep enough drinking water together with it in your emergency kit.
