FAQ
What microorganisms can the Steripen Classic 3 treat?
The manufacturer's fact sheet states that it eliminates bacteria, protozoa and viruses; the UV-C light destroys 99.9% of protozoa (including Giardia and Cryptosporidium), bacteria and even viruses. It is for clear water only.
How much water can the Steripen Classic 3 treat at a time, and how long does it take?
It treats 0.5 or 1 liter at a time, in 48 or 90 seconds. Click the activation button once for 0.5 liter or twice for 1 liter; while the green LEDs flash, submerge the lamp and water sensor pins in clear water and stir.
Can the Steripen Classic 3 be used on cloudy water?
Not recommended. It is for clear water only, because cloudy, sediment-laden water reduces effectiveness. If the water is very cloudy, filter it first and then treat it with the Steripen.
What batteries does the Steripen Classic 3 use, and how many treatments can I get?
It uses 4 AA batteries (alkaline, lithium or rechargeable NiMH). Per the fact sheet, a battery set gives approximately 25 activations with alkaline, 150 with lithium or 100 with rechargeable NiMH; the lamp is rated for 8,000 activations.
What kind of bottle works with the Steripen Classic 3?
The minimum bottle opening diameter is 22 mm; containers with a smaller opening cannot take the lamp.
The LEDs look normal but the lamp is not lit. Is the water safe to drink?
No. Per the manufacturer's quick start guide, if the LED indicators show normal signals but the lamp does not fully illuminate, do not consume the water. Also never try to bypass the water sensor, and do not handle the unit with wet hands.
How heavy and how large is the Steripen Classic 3?
About 178 g with batteries, measuring 18.6 x 4.3 x 4.3 cm. The kit contains the unit and a protective cap.
