France BEAL|From Shoelace Workshop to Global Rope Leading Brand

For a climber, a rope is essential equipment that links safety and trust; for BEAL, it connects over seventy years of manufacturing expertise, friendship, and commitment across a family.

BEAL did not start with mountaineering equipment. In 1951, the story began in a family workshop in Vienne, France, where Pierre and Janine Beal produced shoelaces and various cords for clothing and interior design. It wasn't until the second generation, Michel Beal, attended a climbing exhibition that the family's accumulated rope-making expertise truly met the world of mountains.

From a chance discovery and repeated collaborations with mountaineers and climbers, to continuous involvement in mountain sports, rope access work, and professional protection, BEAL's brand journey is not just a timeline of product development, but a story driven by people working together.

BEAL is a story of family and friendship, and a journey of legacy and innovation.

"Sharing, respect, and commitment" are the core values that BEAL has always upheld. It is these beliefs that have made BEAL a recognized pioneer of innovation in the fields of mountaineering and rope access work today.

BEAL's story has continued since the 1950s.

From BEAL's initial prototype designs to today's continuous innovations for mountain sports and rope access work,
we invite you to explore this journey of the BEAL brand.

1951

Once upon a time, there was a story called BEAL

Pierre and Janine Beal founded the company bearing their name and settled in Vienne, Isère, France.
In the early days, they mainly produced shoelaces and various cords for clothing and interior design.

1974

Michel Beal enters the world of ropes

Pierre and Janine's son, Michel, joined the company founded by his parents.
In 1975, he went to the Grenoble climbing exhibition to interact with customers.
It was then that he discovered that the ropes used by climbers were extremely similar to the products manufactured by BEAL.

1975

Meeting at the Summit

Michel Beal's encounter with the renowned climber Yannick Seigneur became a turning point for the company's development.
The latter became BEAL's technical consultant, infusing his very modern climbing philosophy and participating in the development of the brand's first climbing ropes.

1976

A vibrant, luminous rope!

Pierre, Michel, and Yannick worked day and night to create their first climbing rope.
One Saturday, they ran out of white yarn and had to switch to colored yarn for testing.
As it turned out, this accident was a huge success!
A few months later, this first "dynamic" and "fluorescent" rope was officially unveiled at a climbing exhibition.

1977

Talented climber Patrick Edlinger joins BEAL

He possessed an extraordinary personality, astonishing talent, and a unique climbing style.
In the late 1970s, Patrick Bérault, with great humility, suggested that BEAL collaborate with this genius.
In the climbing world, he was nicknamed "The Blond," and the BEAL team affectionately called him "God."
His radiant smile, sparkling eyes, and the way he danced with the rock face remain deeply etched in BEAL's memory to this day.

1986

At the Summit of the World

Ten years later, the industrialist Pierre Beal, the passionate entrepreneur Michel Beal, the visionary mountain guide Yannick Seigneur, and the iconic climber Patrick Edlinger – their encounters and collaborations finally bore fruit.
Thanks to the concerted efforts of this group, BEAL has become the leading brand in the field of mountaineering and climbing ropes worldwide.

1990

The era of rope specialization

During the 1990s, BEAL began to develop and segment its rope product lines according to different uses.
This led to the creation of the Iceline ice climbing rope, designed specifically for ice climbing – it was smooth, soft, with extremely low impact force, and quickly became indispensable equipment for climbers.
Subsequently, in 1993, BEAL launched its first industrial rope designed for rope access work, officially expanding its professional scope to industrial and protective applications.

2000

More than just ropes!

BEAL diversified by acquiring Austrian competitor Edelweiss and began developing new products designed for rope access activities and work.
Always at the forefront of innovation, the year 2000 also saw the birth of the Aerolight harness – the market's first harness without metal buckles, symbolizing BEAL's continuous spirit of breakthrough in climbing and protective equipment.

2004

Always stay dry

DRY COVER and GOLDEN DRY are two significant innovations in the world of ropes, technologies that BEAL is still proud of today.
The former is a surface treatment that enhances the rope's abrasion resistance and gives it hydrophobic properties; the latter ensures the rope is completely waterproof and extremely durable.
These two technologies allow climbers to practice and challenge themselves safely in all weather and environmental conditions.

2006

Going Global

BEAL chose to establish a second production factory in Madagascar.
In the heart of this country known as the "Red Island," the new factory fully replicates the structure of the first factory in Vienne, France, primarily producing the Active Line series of ropes.
The 12,000 square meter facility also houses a sewing workshop, specializing in the production of safety harnesses, slings, and harnesses.

2014

A Founder, a Legacy

On April 1st, BEAL founder Pierre Beal passed away.
Friends and partners from around the world sent messages to pay tribute to this important figure who founded the brand.
As his former workshop supervisor said, the BEAL team will always remember him as the brand's first employee – fully dedicated, and immensely proud of his work and products.

2015

Lightweight, you say? Absolutely!

The spirit of Pierre Beal continues, and BEAL constantly pushes the boundaries of innovation.
Between 2014 and 2015, BEAL launched two groundbreaking products:
the Gully rope – the thinnest and lightest twin rope on the market; and the Opéra rope – the first single rope weighing less than 50 grams per meter.
Concurrently, in the field of rope access work, BEAL also launched the BEAL PRO series, providing reliable and innovative equipment for all professional practitioners.

2023

Highly Friendly

BEAL reaches new milestones: a new brand identity and a new headquarters.
The new operational base is designed with reducing carbon footprint at its core, while also modernizing production facilities and processes.
With its new brand slogan "Highly Friendly," BEAL reiterates its origins and philosophy – this new phase symbolizes the brand's pursuit of excellence while remaining true to its fundamental roots and the spirit born of friendship.

2024

Sharing expertise with you

In 2024, BEAL proudly announces two significant milestones – the opening of its first training center in France, and the establishment of its first physical store in Sarajevo.

The birth of the first BEAL boutique symbolizes the brand's desire to be closer to its customers and provide the community with a unique and immersive brand experience.

Meanwhile, BEAL's IRATA certified training center
will provide professional rope access training, allowing professionals working at height to directly benefit from the manufacturer's expertise and fully leverage BEAL's potential in rope innovation and technology.

A rope that extends more than just technology

Looking back at BEAL's development, what truly drives the brand forward has always been more than just materials, processes, and product specifications. From Pierre and Janine founding their family workshop, to Michel bringing rope-making technology into mountaineering, and then climbers like Yannick Seigneur and Patrick Edlinger joining, every turning point for BEAL has come from the meeting of different expertise and experiences.

Precisely for this reason, "sharing, respect, and commitment" is not just a brand value, but a common language that runs through BEAL's seventy-plus years of history. It is reflected in understanding users, adhering to product safety, and in the long-established trust between the brand and the climbing community, as well as professional workers.

From initial shoelaces and cords to today's ropes and protective equipment spanning rock climbing, mountaineering, rope access work, and professional rescue, BEAL consistently connects people, technology, and environment with a single rope. This story continues, and with every use, this cross-generational expertise and commitment continues to reach the next mountain, the next work site.
