Tuvalu Water Crisis | SPECTRA Solar Desalination System Establishes Multiple Power Backup Solutions

In October 2011, Tuvalu's freshwater lens, its primary source of water, gradually depleted. With the rainy season yet to arrive, the island nation needed to re-establish its drinking water supply amidst limited energy resources and aging equipment.

SPECTRA Watermakers and New Zealand's Enertec Marine Systems jointly built a 48V DC solar-powered desalination system, integrating batteries and a diesel generator, to ensure water supply could continue operating under the site's energy conditions.

Freshwater Lens Disappears, Island Water Supply Enters Immediate Crisis

A freshwater lens is a layer of fresh groundwater floating above saltwater, formed when rainwater infiltrates low-lying coral islands. Tuvalu and many atolls rely heavily on this limited resource. When prolonged drought depletes the freshwater lens, residents can only wait for rain, external water delivery, or activate desalination.

Allowing the Water Production System to Switch According to Energy Conditions

Colin Pawson of Enertec was responsible for integrating solar panels, battery packs, a diesel generator, and the desalination system. The system can prioritize renewable energy, switching to batteries or a diesel generator when conditions change, preventing disruptions to drinking water supply due to a single energy source.

SPECTRA's low-power water-making technology allows higher-yield desalination to be driven by solar energy, reducing the island nation's long-term reliance on diesel and mitigating the impact of fuel prices and shipping disruptions on water supply.

Mabu Valley Observation: The resilience of island nation water supply comes from having multiple options for both water and energy. Integrating solar power, batteries, and generators into a single water production system allows equipment to continue operating even when weather and fuel conditions change.
