Red Cross Polynesia Emergency Water Supply | SPECTRA Aquifer Custom Water Production System
The ability of emergency water supply equipment to arrive quickly is often as important as its water production capacity. The Red Cross partnered with SPECTRA's New Zealand distributor, Enertech, to create a customized system more suitable for commercial airline transport, based on their experience with the Aquifer 360.
The equipment was subsequently deployed in Tonga, the Marshall Islands, and Rarotonga to support the emergency drinking water needs of island regions.

Solving Transportation First Allows Equipment to Reach Disaster Areas
The Red Cross required the system to meet the planned air baggage weight targets at the time, enabling relief workers to quickly transport it to mission locations via commercial flights. Airline and route regulations change over time, and actual transportation still needs to comply with current hazardous goods, weight, and size regulations.
Not Just Desalination, but Also Freshwater Treatment
Rescue sites may have access to seawater, brackish water, or contaminated freshwater, so the system was required to have a purification mode for freshwater input and output. The built-in AC to DC power also allows the equipment to be powered by portable AC generators, increasing energy configuration flexibility.
Robust construction and an intuitive operating method for volunteers were also central to the design. Professional equipment that relies heavily on original factory technicians would struggle to provide value in multi-country, multi-island rescue missions with frequent personnel rotation.
Mabu Valley Observation: Rapid deployment doesn't just mean lightweight equipment; it integrates air transport, power, raw water differences, operational training, and maintenance into the design. The value of the customized Aquifer lies precisely in consolidating these conditions into an actionable rescue solution.
