In October 2011, Tuvalu's freshwater lens, its primary water source, gradually depleted. With the rainy season yet to arrive, the island nation faced the challenge of re-establishing its drinking water supply amidst limited energy resources and aging infrastructure.

SPECTRA Watermakers collaborated with Enertec Marine Systems of New Zealand to install a 48V DC solar-powered desalination system, integrating batteries and diesel generators to ensure continuous water supply regardless of the available energy conditions.

Disappearance of the Freshwater Lens, Immediate Water Crisis for the Island

A freshwater lens is a layer of fresh groundwater that floats on top of saltwater after rainfall seeps into a low-lying coral island. Tuvalu and many atolls heavily rely on this limited water source. When prolonged dry spells deplete the freshwater lens, residents are left to wait for rain, external water delivery, or the activation of desalination systems.

Allowing the Water Production System to Switch According to Energy Conditions

Colin Pawson of Enertec was responsible for integrating the solar panels, battery bank, diesel generator, and desalination system. The system can prioritize renewable energy and switch to batteries or a diesel generator when conditions change, preventing interruptions in drinking water supply due to a single energy source.

SPECTRA's low-power water production technology enables higher-yield desalination to be driven by solar power, reducing the island nation's long-term reliance on diesel and mitigating the impact of fuel prices and shipping disruptions on water supply.
