background

Although Indonesia is surrounded by sea water, it still faces significant challenges in providing safe drinking water to remote areas, especially after natural disasters. Many areas are nearly inaccessible due to extreme terrain, making distribution difficult when need becomes severe. Residents in these areas often have to travel long distances or rely on support from NGOs or government agencies.

Indonesian police are on the frontline in crisis situations and can provide water rescue. Therefore, there is a need for a durable mobile solution capable of purifying fresh and seawater in a variety of situations.

Project details

By combining Spectra’s energy-efficient desalination technology with Katadyn’s proven ceramic freshwater filtration technology, a solution is created that can purify water from virtually any source. The truck's size and design allow it to be transported via C-130 transport aircraft, expanding its emergency use throughout the Indonesian archipelago. The truck is powered by a diesel generator, has a pump that can draw raw water from 80 meters away, and is equipped with a 1,600-litre water tank to store clean water for future distribution. The truck can provide 440 liters of desalinated water or 1,500 liters of fresh water filtration per hour. At a standard of 4 liters of drinking water per person per day, this output can provide safe drinking water for up to 2,600 people (seawater) or 9,000 people (freshwater). Includes post-UV filtered water treatment to ensure product water safety during storage. After arriving, it only takes 30 minutes for the truck to start distributing water to local residents.

Currently, three trucks are operating with the Indonesian Police Force, with another three scheduled to enter service in 2022. The project was built and commissioned by our local Indonesian partner Teknocorp, who is also responsible for service, maintenance and training. This project demonstrates the portability, efficiency and durability of Katadyn water solutions and provides an excellent example for future rescue vehicle projects.

About desalination systems

LB 2800F is a reverse osmosis water production equipment that uses a Pearson Pump energy recovery device. These durable systems are highly efficient and ideally suited for solar power. A fixed recovery ratio means that reverse osmosis membranes can be used for many years and are not considered consumables. Due to the simplicity of the system, highly technically trained operators are not required. In addition, the Spectra Connect controller allows full automation of the operation of water-making equipment and, when necessary, freshwater flushing. These rugged water-making devices can significantly improve the health and quality of life of residents in any water-stressed area, as long as the area has access to seawater or any water source.

About freshwater technology

Katadyn MF-7 is a ceramic microfilter capable of removing bacteria, protozoa and other water contaminants without removing essential minerals. Ceramic filters can last up to 100 cleaning cycles before needing to be replaced. This Swiss-made water filter can operate independently to purify fresh water and serve as a pre-filter for the LB-2800 when using a salt water source.
