Arctic Navigation's Drinking Water Lifeline | KATADYN PowerSurvivor 40E Desalinator
Ellen and Seth Leonard circumnavigated the globe from 2006 to 2010, then sailed their 40-foot sailboat Celeste to the Arctic.
With limited water tank capacity and extended intervals between port calls, they used a KATADYN PowerSurvivor 40E to produce fresh water from seawater. This allowed them to meet their drinking, washing, and basic living needs without being entirely dependent on the next port.

Small Water Tanks, Unrestricted Sailing
Celeste's water storage capacity is about 100 gallons, half of their previous boat. Facing transoceanic voyages and remote cruising areas, they were initially concerned about insufficient freshwater capacity. The compact size, low power consumption, and durable design of the PowerSurvivor 40E allowed them to continuously replenish fresh water from seawater onboard.

Six Weeks Without Refilling, Maintaining Daily Life Onboard
The Leonards' logbook noted that during their Arctic leg in Alaska, they went six consecutive weeks without refilling their water tanks, yet still maintained showering, washing, and daily drinking. They eventually refilled their tanks not because they ran out of water, but because they happened upon a convenient resupply point.
This experience demonstrates that marine watermakers don't just change storage capacity, but also cruising route planning and port call rhythm. When a boat can produce its own water, sailors can base more decisions on weather, sea conditions, and safety, rather than being dictated by resupply points.

Low Power Operation, Manual Backup Retained
Manufacturer specifications indicate that the PowerSurvivor 40E has an average desalination rate of approximately 98.4%, producing about 5.7 liters per hour, with a 12V operating current of about 4A. The unit can also be manually operated to produce water in case of power loss, providing important backup for long voyages.
Actual water production will be affected by water temperature, salinity, membrane condition, and operating conditions; onboard, it still needs to be combined with water storage, power, filter maintenance, and abandon-ship survival equipment to form a complete drinking water plan.

Mabu Valley Observation: The value of a marine watermaker is not to eliminate the water tank, but to allow a limited water tank to be continuously replenished. Low power consumption, autonomous water production, and manual backup collectively reduce the risk of water shortages in remote cruising areas.
